Partido político fundado el 4 de junio de 1912 , en Iquique, con el nombre de Partido Obrero Socialista, el cual modificó en su IV Congreso, realizado el 2 de enero de 1922 en Rancagua, pasando a denominarse Partido Comunista de Chile.
Su origen está estrechamente vinculado al desarrollo del movimiento obrero y social de comienzos del siglo XX, siendo su fundador el obrero tipográfico Luis Emilio Recabarren.
Es uno de los partidos más importantes de la izquierda chilena, teniendo una larga trayectoria dentro de la institucionalidad política, aunque también en determinados períodos ha estado proscrito y perseguido, como por ejemplo durante el primer gobierno de Carlos Ibáñez del Campo (1927‐1931), luego Gabriel González Videla les pone fuera de la ley en septiembre de 1948 (ley maldita) período que se prolonga hasta agosto de 1958 (casi todo segundo gobierno de Ibáñez) y la más reciente persecución e intento de aniquilamiento realizado por la dictadura encabezada por Pinochet entre 1973 y 1989, que significó la muerte de más de medio millar de sus militantes, incluidas tres direcciones políticas en ese período.
Ha participado en diferentes alianzas, siendo las más relevantes el Frente Popular (1938), el Frente de Acción Popular (1958 y 1964), posteriormente la Unidad Popular (1970) y últimamente en Nueva Mayoría (2014).
Militantes comunistas han ocupado cargos de gobierno en las administraciones de Gabriel González Videla, entre 1946 y 1947, Salvador Allende, entre 1970 y 1973 y Michelle Bachelet entre 2014 y 2018. Ha contado con representación parlamentaria desde el año 1921, cuando Luis Emilio Recabarren y Luis Cruz son elegidos diputados.
A pesar de ser duramente golpeados por la represión política en diferentes períodos de la historia, ha sido un partido que ha jugado un rol determinante en diversas esferas de la vida nacional. Así, por ejemplo, ha fomentado la sindicalización de los trabajadores y propiciado su organización en centrales sindicales nacionales; a partir de Recabarren quien participa y potencia la FOCH (Federación Obrera de Chile, 1909‐ 1936), luego la CTCH (Confederación de Trabajadores de Chile, 1936‐1953), la CUT (Central Única de Trabajadores, 1953‐1973) y actualmente en la Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (1988 a la fecha).
El Movimiento Pro Emancipación de la Mujer Chilena (MENCH 1935‐1953) también cuenta a mujeres comunistas como sus fundadoras. En el ámbito de la cultura destacan militantes como Pablo Neruda, Víctor Jara, Violeta Parra, Alejandro Lipschutz y una larga lista de premios nacionales en literatura, artes y ciencias. A lo largo de la historia sus principales dirigentes han sido: Luis Emilio Recabarren, Elías Lafertte, Carlos Contreras Labarca, Ricardo Fonseca, Galo González, Luis Corvalán, Volodia Teitelboim, Gladys Marín, siendo su actual presidente Guillermo Teillier de Valle y su Secretario General Lautaro Carmona Soto. El régimen militar (1973‐1990) fue particularmente complejo para los militantes comunistas, pues sufrieron persecución, detenciones, desapariciones forzadas, muerte y muchos de ellos debieron partir al exilio.
A pesar de este duro contexto,se inició su reorganización en la clandestinidad, luego de la liberación de su Secretario General Luis Corvalán Lepe (1958‐1988) En agosto de 1977 se realizó el primer Pleno del Comité Central del partido, donde se analiza la coyuntura política, iniciándose un cambio estratégico que proponía «todas las formas de lucha contra la dictadura».
Esta política se hizo oficial en 1980 bajo la denominación de Rebelión Popular de Masas. Bajo esta estrategia, durante esa década de 1980 formó parte importante de las jornadas de protesta y de la movilización social opositora. A fines de la década, el partido no ingresó a la Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia,siendo uno de los últimos grupos que llamó a votar NO, en el plebiscito del 5 de octubre de 1988, que definió el fin del régimen militar. En 1988, durante la realización, en clandestinidad, del XV fue elegido Secretario General Volodia Teitelboim V. Después del retorno a la democracia, entre 1990 y 2014, el partido fue opositor a los diferentes gobiernos, no logrando tampoco representación parlamentaria. A pesar de eso, en diciembre de 1989 apoyó la candidatura de Patricio Aylwin Azócar, apoyado por la Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia.
Entre el 11 y el 15 de agosto de 1994 el XX Congreso Nacional, el cual eligió un nuevo Comité Central, siendo electa como Secretaria General Gladys Marín, quien fue reelegida en el XXI Congreso del partido realizado entre el 15 y el 18 de octubre de 1998.
En 1998, Gladys Marín fue nombrada candidata para las elecciones presidenciales de diciembre de 1999, siendo la primera mujer nominada a esa responsabilidad. En 2005, tras la muerte de Gladys Marín, el IX Pleno del Comité Central eligió presidente al hoy diputado por el Distrito Nº 13 Guillermo Teillier del Valle y como Secretario General a Lautaro Carmona Soto. A fines de la década del 2000, se produjo un acercamiento a la centro‐izquierda en la búsqueda de alternativas políticas y sociales para luchar por un mejor bienestar para el pueblo.
En junio de 2009, se gestó un pacto electoral contra la exclusión entre el Juntos Podemos Más y la Concertación de Partidos por la Democracia lo cual permitió que presentaran candidatos en lista conjunta.
Como consecuencia de ello, en las elecciones parlamentarias de 2009, el Partido obtiene 3 diputados, marcando el retorno al Congreso Nacional desde 1973. Desde abril de 2013, pasó a formar parte de la coalición política Nueva Mayoría y en noviembre de ese año, apoyó la candidatura presidencial de Michelle Bachelet Jeria. En las elecciones parlamentarias de 2013 sumó 3 diputados a su bancada, con lo cual completa un número de 6 parlamentarios.
Durante el gobierno de Michelle Bachelet Jeria (2014‐2018), el Partido regresa a ocupar cargos ministeriales. En las recientes elecciones presidenciales 2017 el Partido respaldo la opción del senador Alejandro Guillier A. y en las elecciones parlamentarias obtuvo la elección de 8 diputados. Destaca en el ámbito juvenil del país la existencia y accionar de las Juventudes Comunistas de Chile, organizada desde 1932 y altamente incidentes en la vida política de las y los jóvenes chilenos en sus múltiples expresiones.
Hoy estamos ante la posibilidad cierta de dar un paso trascendente en esa dirección. Estamos a las puertas del debate por una nueva Constitución, una nueva carta magna que incluirá las demandas del pueblo de Chile, que al fin soberanamente puede empezar a regir su propio destino. Y nosotros y nosotras comunistas, aspiramos con legítimo derecho a dirigir los destinos del país con nuestro candidato a la Presidencia de la República Daniel Jadue.
Hemos avanzado mucho pero nuestra tarea es ardua y compleja, demanda mucho más empeño y fuerza combativa, ese es el llamado que hoy en nombre de los que nos acompañan desde su ejemplo, con las banderas en alto de los derechos humanos, con visiones compartidas de nuestras esperanzas y anhelos, con la mirada solidaria hacia otros pueblos que luchan y también por los derechos de nuestros pueblos originarios y exigiendo la libertad de los presos políticos que han sido artífices en que lleguemos a este momento.
El partido de la clase trabajadora los invita en este día a seguir avanzando junto al pueblo, en igualdad plena entre hombres y mujeres, y lo hacemos junto a nuestras Juventudes Comunistas, protagonizando las luchas del presente para construir el futuro.
Estamos en medio de una crisis del neoliberalismo a nivel global y de un mundo asolado por la pandemia. El imperialismo norteamericano, en defensa del capitalismo, se empeña en desestabilizar por cualquier medio a los que amenazan su hegemonía.
Pero los pueblos no se someten. Al igual que hoy, cuando el propio pueblo norteamericano se levanta en una oleada de protestas, contra el racismo y la discriminación política, social y económica, en nuestro país, en octubre del año pasado, se produjo el estallido social que puso en jaque al gobierno neoliberal de Piñera, que tuvo que ceder y abrir paso a un proceso para establecer una Nueva Constitución Política, camino posible para avanzar hacia un nuevo proyecto de desarrollo para Chile.
